Re: this Sunday Hikes

Sunday 2/3 I'm wanting to hike mt wilson from chantry flats ... is there any ice or snow up that ways for this sunday from the storm that went through? I don't recall hearing about snowfall on Wilson during the last storm. I doubt there was much if any. I was all over that mountain two weeks ago. I...

Islip Ridge and the Big Cienega - Crystal Lake January 26

Weather forecasters predicted a little let up in the rain yesterday, so I jumped at the opportunity to satisfy my latest urge to check out conditions in the Crystal Lake area. After attending to my sick cat in the morning, I drove up Hwy 39 around 11AM, but was stopped for half an hour behind emerge...

Re: Litter, Trail Cutting and other things that blow my mind

As a guy who works on trails in Altadena, I don't let the disrespectful hikers bother me or disrupt my enjoyment of the mountains. Such people are not worth considering, unless you catch them in the act, then you can say something and maybe convince them to change their behavior. There are some plac...

Higher up on the incline trail I could see a waterfall on the other side of Rubio. Anyone know the name of this one? After you cross over to the Chalet Trail you can see Leontine Falls. The Throne Trail continues down a short distance from the Chalet/(Upper) Old Echo junction to an overlook directl...

That description of the wind really moved me. I was raised by a family of sumo wrestlers, and they took turns hugging me each day. So I know exactly what you mean.

Re: Mt Baldy in April 2013

It's quite possible you'll encounter snow in early April. At that time last year storms were still dropping snow as low as Icehouse Canyon. I did hike the Bear Canyon Trail to Baldy in March with only a few patches of snow and none on the summit. But most of that trail melts quickly because it's exp...

I agree - it's not vandalism - it's just a different point of view. It's not "just a different point of view." It's an evil point of view. These people are either ignorant vandals or pure life-haters. In either case, they represent a certain degree of evil on the mountain. The people who ...

David described the route starting behind 1101 E Loma Alta. It is also poss...

I will be starting early (around 8AM), traveling at a leisurely pace, perhaps cutting a branch here and there, and possibl...

Sunday morning I decided to catch the sunrise from Baldy's summit for the first time. Went up the Baldy Bowl trail and got to the summit at 6:11 AM. Guess who was up there? Yep, the same dogs. Re: Acorn Trail-Wright Mtn-Pine Mtn-Dawson-Baldy... and back

In winter, if any ice, there would be no way without being roped. Has something happened to this portion of the trail? I've only read that it's "an easy climb to Pine Mtn". It most certainly is not for a section of perhaps 300-400' vertical on the north side of Pine. Perhaps someone can s...

Thanks, Elwood. That information is tremendously helpful. I'm planning to do my first 50-mile fastpack covering every official trail in the Cucamonga Wilderness. I'd like to be able to jog at least half of the descent to Joe Elliot from Etiwanda, and then power walk back up with a 2 or 3 mph pace.

I dug this thread up because I'm interested in any current information on the Cucamonga Peak Trail segment between Joe Elliot CG and Etiwanda Peak. In late August I found an abandoned tent up on Santa Anita Ridge. I enjoyed reading your TR. I'm not familiar with the Los Padres forest. The cross-country bushwhacking and steep climbs are right up my alley. So, Sean, what do you think is Inspiration Point? Is point 4685 on your map (above) Inspiration Point? I consider Inspiration Point to be where Thaddeus Lowe built the ramada in 1925. The Point's original location, before the ramada, could have been summit 4714 directly NW of the ramada, which is w...

I think Panorama Point is an unofficial name of same vague point near what is labeled Muir Peak (4688') on some maps. Perhaps some even think 4688 is also or even should be Panorama Point or Inspiration Point. T Chester speculates it is point 4504 just ESE of 4688. It's all very unclear. My guess i...
