Re: Bear Canyon Trail
Yesterday I hiked the Bear Canyon Trail between Mt. Lowe Road and Tom Sloan Saddle. This segment is sometimes known as the Tom Sloan Saddle Trail, but I hope that name goes away, as it causes confusion with the Tom Sloan Trail. The trail is in good shape with minimal issues, such as mild overgrowth....

No, I haven't tried that, but I've eyeballed the same slope. The rocks look bigger and more annoying on that side, at least from what I can see at the parking lot.

Thanks for the report. Amazing, you found my eyelash curler!? Seriously though, Thunder Ridge has some of the best scree surfing in the summertime.

Thanks for the report. That looks like a fun place to get impaled. You need an army of trimmers dressed in full battle armor to take on the south side traverse! I'll be busy that day.

This photo might be used to figure out the location, but there's not much information. Somewhere in/near San Dimas?

Thanks for the report. Sometimes the best hikes are unplanned and decided on a whim. I like driving up the ACH with no particular goal in mind, then I'll get inspired to stop and explore a random area.

Re: Beautiful Day On Bonita Peak
I returned to Bonita on Tuesday, this time with Keith. The register can is still there. But again I missed the alleged hidden reference mark. Bonita is really a set of three bumps, and the register is on the lowest one. If I had endless time on my hands, I'd clear a space at the highest bump and mov...

Re: Allison Mine Trail
The trail up to Heaton saddle from Heaton flat is in bad shape as well now? It's in poor shape. Mild to moderate overgrowth with many tread issues, including rutting, rocks, and washouts. You don't have to crawl or risk your life, but you have to duck occasionally and constantly focus on foot place...

We found this baby on the Heaton Not-Flat Trail.
Like a boss, it sat motionless in the middle of the trail and forced us to sidestep.

Re: Allison Mine Trail
I think it's about time for an update on the Allison Trail. Keith and I went up there yesterday. We took the overgrown and neglected Heaton Flat Trail to Coldwater Saddle. Frankly I felt like turning around already. My feets don't like me very much these days. But Keith and I pressed on, hoping to r...

Middle Ysidro (Anza-Borrego)
Keith invited me to hike Middle Ysidro (5855') in the San Ysidro Mountains of Anza-Borrego. He made it sound difficult, and I was craving a difficult desert adventure, so off we went. We parked at a random spot along Montezuma-Borrego Highway and started making tracks by 7:30am. Keith had created a ...

Thanks for the report. That road can get muddy after storms. Maybe they finally paved the bad section for the ranch owner. I haven't been over that way in several months, but we used to go up that road regularly while working on the Yerba Buena Trail. The creek boasts a chorus of frogs at night.

Re: Eaton Canyon Trails
I finished the second tier of the rock wall. IMG_20240322_180335182.jpg It's mostly buried in dirt because I also started grading the tread above and tossed the debris onto the slope. IMG_20240322_181223412.jpg On my next trip I should finish the third tier and restore the tread to three feet wide. ...

Thanks! Looks like you efficiently flowed through this trip. Get it, because you planned the things to see in the lava field? I crawled through lava tubes in Maui once. They called it spelunking. I'll bet a dollar that men who play with saws don't enjoy dealing with politically "correct" desk jockeys. But that's not even the real problem. Incompetence. The FS simply doesn't know what they're doing. When they get out of the way and let volunteers in, and let their few good employees...

Re: Suicide: Eaton Cyn./Henninger Feb. 28, 2024
A 41-year-old Rosemead man apparently died by suicide in Pasadena’s Eaton Canyon Park early on Tuesday, police said. The man, who reportedly suffered from depression and had attempted suicide at the park last year, reportedly hanged himself from a tree on the Henninger Trail, authorities said. Fami...
