Re: Monrovia Hillside Wilderness Preserve

Used to be a semi- popular mt bike ride in the late 80's and early 90's..

I do recall some access issues in later years.

Any signs indicating "no mt bikes allowed" now?

Re: Here we go again - More snow rescues

Thnx Ellen. Ya, yikes. One day after you'd done C2C late November, we hiked down off trail toward Sid David and stumbled onto that spooky shuttered CCC camp. We thought it was illicit pot-growers... I ponder risk management and age. My particular vice these days has been mt biking. Last year I kept ...

Re: Here we go again - More snow rescues

I read the San Jac and Summit Post forum replies... Crampons would have made some difference? I am no longer eager, so I stay off Baldy in full conditions, but if I were still getting after it, probably would carry both. Micros for most of the time and crampons when necessary. I think we also start ...

Always enjoyed exploring the terrain and mines above Widman Ranch (mid- 70's). Sometimes I'd prefer taking the longer dirt road up Cow and Cattle Canyon .. 10 miles I recall? Bummer that approach is off limits....

Re: Monrovia Canyon Park to Spring Camp by bike

that's a good ride. i did it about 6 weeks ago. took me prolly 3 hrs ride time to get to Spring Camp, tho I had no interest in it.. nothing particularly special about it, tho that entire back side of Monrovia Peak is very nice .. but I did take a turn and go down the seemingly abandoned Upper San Ol...

Re: 20150822 Bear Creek Spire North Arete, III 5.8

Bummer about the smoke. That takes some of the fun outta it.. And in terms of perspective- it's all about the long run. Take care of life. If the climbs are meant to be, they will happen. Be nice if I could do that route in a day, but at slow and old 58.. well.... I was happy just to backpack and da...

The north facing walls got a fair amount of rock-climbnig action in the late 70's.

Taco- have you given the walls a serious assessment? Is there some quality up there?

Great trip report thnx. I'm always on the fence with snowshoes. Used to prefer skiis for everything, but now me older, less skilled. Snowshoes likely safer. How much did they help on this hike? Did you feel you needed them? Same question applies to crampons. Seems most of the time better off just wi...

I could be talked into this hike. Been eyeballing it on the map for 40 years.

No way anybody is goin LSMC to BSMC. But cool video.

I tried to find Lookout Point a few times in the 70's and basically did what those guys did. Must have been a trail that started downstream a tad ... that the key. But it's a bushwhack.

Always wanted to do that giant rock slog. Still do. Get a partner who you can simul-climb with. Almost as fast as soloing but safer. We used to simul a lot BITD. Did do the central chimney on Stonehouse Buttress. Sort of a poor man's Steck- Salathe. Worthwhile. As is the Keyhole Wall one canyon sout...

Ya no surprise.

I cannot stand in judgement. Only reason I survived those crazy 70's was perhaps I had enough miles under my boots so that by the time I found myself tripping hard way yonder, I had the good sense to not push things.

Of course it's not normal. We are in what- year 2 of a drought? 2 years ago early July the pipe at Trail Fork was putting out a slow but functional flow (2 min a liter?). I could also pump out of small puddles from the 1/2 way springs at the lower camp.. Sunday's flow at the spring above Fish Fork C...

ANF's management is rightly considered the Forest Circus. No doubt the user trail that goes up "Razorback Ridge" should be closed. I used to rock climb and free solo all manner of technical rock way off the ground, but you'd NEVER get me up that trail. But the closure to canyoneers is absu...
