Thanks for posting! I'd love to see more info about the mines and the Bear Canyon narrows. How far above the trail junction (from Smith Mountain saddle) are the narrows? If you write more detailed reports, nobody would complain

wesweswes was thinking that the big white ones were a species of Lactarius. What do you think about the white one with the little round wrinkly ball on top of it?

Yeah. Now that I look at Uncle Rico's map again, I believe it. The medium-hit areas (yellow in his map) are clearly clustered, and not distributed randomly. So they're displaying some real effect. Interesting!

According to both of these, there's a ton of variability from spot to spot. Do we know if it actually does vary this much? Measurement error?

Have you tried the Selle Anatomica already? That thing was really painful for me for some reason. Scared me off leather saddles in general.

Sadly, that housing was unsalvageable. Replaced that and the corresponding one on the other side. They're all < a year old now. Bike good as new!

So apparently Red's Shortcut is described in some canyoneer routes, under the name "Twin Canyon Trail". For instance Brennen's "CCC canyon" page. That would explain why it still exists, and why it gets at least some minimal maintenance.

I just biked the LA tourist race. It's a race through the local mountains that starts/ends at a bike shop in Burbank. There's no predefined route: you're instead given a list of checkpoints to hit in any order and using any route that you like. People then end up with a wide variety of routes. Here'...

I just think it isn't very interesting. There are zero trees. It connects to Brown Mountain fire road, which also isn't very interesting. If you're coming from Oakwilde to Brown Mountain peak, it would be a good connector, but that's about it.
